Unleash the Power of Theatre

Unleash the Power of Theatre

Our site-specific work is immersive and carries a deep respect for the world of storytelling. We seek to engage with all ages and are especially mindful of overlooked voices. Every play we create begins with the two magical words: This Place. We research the location, we interview the local people, we gather their stories, and we create theatre and drama from the never ending well of human experience.

March 29th: Anne Lister teas

Venue
Halifax Minster

Halifax

A site-specific piece written for Halifax Minster by Alison Field and to be performed in March 2025. Here we meet the silent army of women who cater for the culinary and emotional needs of the visitors to the Minster. They are volunteers who expect little praise or thanks and seldom receive any. They are providers and guardians of the proverbial bunfight, but also highly competent, intelligent women with diverse life experiences. Here we begin to recognise their value and contribution, not only to Minster life, but as symbols of the millions of women who generously provide hospitality to ensure community events happen.

SEPTEMBER : DOLLY

Venue
Grayston Unity

Halifax

Written by Co-founder Amanda Caswell-Robinson, who grew up amidst the hurly burly of a Working Men’s Club run by her parents. It’s a tale of never ending quantities of Coca-Cola and set in one of Halifax’s most prolific bars. After scores of interviews with pub goers past and present; we hear a heartbreaking and comical collection of stories and see how bars and pubs are very often the lifeblood of community. Enjoy the an evening of wonder and wine orchestrated by a landlady who loves Dolly Parton.

Uncover
our story

In 2023 the co-founders of This Place Arts, Amanda and Alison, met at an improvisation class at Fire & Water, Sowerby Bridge. Fire & Water is a hub for creative innovation in the Calderdale Valley. A place where creative ventures begin and sparks fly. Amanda and Alison both have extensive experience in performing arts and immediately formed a mutual respect for each other’s work. Their Shared values in theatre making, laid solid foundations for creative collaboration. They quickly began writing and performing together as part of several theatre and spoken word projects at Fire & Water.  Following this, Alison was commissioned to write, ‘Swimming Pool Diaries’, which celebrates the long life of the venue. Amanda and Alison performed together in the piece, further embedding their partnership.

The success of their collaboration, led to a deepening interest in the potential of theatre to enrich communities. They began to develop site-specific work with ideas generated through community engagement. Using overlooked stories and voices is now at the heart of their creative process. Amanda and Alison have since received interest from many different community groups and the forming of This Place Arts was a natural step to establish their work and create bespoke performance experiences.

Drama, Art and story Telling….

We were recently commissioned to create workshops to introduce the importance and value of traditional stories in consolidating community and regional identity. Using local stories and recorded legends, we used Drama, Spoken word and Art as a gateway for exploring the participants own family tales and legends. Stories creatively connected to their immediate landscape, culture and heritage. If you need a bespoke workshop created for children, teenagers or adults please get in touch with your requirements.

The Boggart

The Boggart Workshop

The Boggart Workshops we provided were for children aged 6 to 10 years and were delivered from our local Arts Hub, ‘Fire and Water’ in Sowerby Bridge in Halifax. Boggarts are legendary Yorkshire based mischievous creatures who get up to no good! You can imagine how much the children loved them. Sowerby Bridge, has a place called Boggart lane so participants explored the history of the area as part of the workshop. Children painted pictures and created costumes and then performed improvised and narrated tales about Boggarts.

The Hermit Workshop

The hermit

Our Hermit Workshops were especially created to engage teenagers in the cultural heritage of story telling. From the stimulus of a famous folk tale they created their own theatre productions from their own family memories and from the tales passed down by their grandparents. Together with us and a specialist Art practitioner, they went on to design costumes and create props for their final performance.
